Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO, has refuted claims that his selection as the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) running mate for the 2024 elections was strategically aimed at garnering votes from a specific ethnic group.

Speaking on Channel One TV with Umaru Sanda, as monitored by MyNewsGH, he described such allegations as misguided.

“The party supporters or leadership didn’t choose me because of my tribal background. Have you asked them? How can someone on the roadside decide the reason behind my nomination?” he remarked, challenging the basis of these assumptions.

NAPO expressed concern over the growing trend of tribalizing political decisions in Ghana, arguing that such narratives distract from the real issues affecting citizens and undermine national unity.

He also addressed the issue of voter turnout, highlighting disparities across regions during elections.

“In the Ashanti Region, voter turnout was about 65%, which is higher than in many other regions, including Greater Accra and Volta. This shows that elections are about mobilization and participation, not ethnicity,” he explained.
