Accra, March 12, GNA - The President of the Commission of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Dr Mohamed Ibn Chambas, noted on Monday that one basic requirement for progress in Africa was political stability.

He said once a country had a secure and stable political atmosphere, socio-economic progress was easily attainable. Dr Chambas, who was speaking to the Ghana News Agency in Accra, said Ghana celebrating its 50th anniversary within a political atmosphere that was quite exemplary on the continent, projected the country in a very positive note.

"We need success stories in Africa and Ghana is one of the success stories on the continent."

Dr Chambas said much as it was worth admitting that the country faced challenges, it also paid to recognise the fact that democratic governance was gaining ground.

He added that an economic framework had been adopted which with consistent implementation had the potential of propelling the country forward in progress. Dr Chambas said there was the need to ensure that the country maintained the level of progress and respect that it had achieved since it was a shining example on the continent for others to follow.
