Pollution in the Volta River

The Environmental Protection Agency says it has received with utmost concern, reported pollution from an unknown source of sections of Volta River between Akosombo, Juapong and Kpong. A release from EPA said the report did not state when the pollution took place, but EPA got the message on 19th August 2002. Currently, it is believed several fish have died and fishermen along the affected areas are collecting these fish for sale. At present, EPA environmental quality staff is at the pollution sites investigating the cause and source of the problem for the necessary mitigation. EPA advises the general public to be careful when buying fish caught from the affected areas. EPA will update the general public as soon as the source and cause of the problem is ascertained.
