Mon, 5 May 2003 Source: .

Polytechnic lecturers have begun a nationwide strike action to pressurize government to complete negotiations on their salaries and conditions of service.

Negotiations for an increase in salaries and wages of the lecturers have been running for the past seven months. According to the Polytechnic lecturers, the delay has gone beyond their patience.

Meanwhile the National Executives of the Polytechnic Teachers Association are meeting the Minister of Tertiary Education, Ms. Elizabeth Ohene, to present their case to attempt to complete the negotiations. The lecturers are demanding a forty per cent increase in their salaries.

But government says it cannot pay satisfy that demand. National President of POTAG, Godfred Ntow Gyau, told JOYNEWS that the lecturers would not accept anything below the forty per cent they are demanding.

Polytechnic lecturers in the Accra, Kumasi, Takoradi, and Sunyani have heeded the national executives call to put their tools down.
