Poor storage of water is a source of contamination

Ho, March 24, GNA - Poor storage and haphazard handling of potable water in homes account for some of the contamination complained about by consumers, Theophilus T. Collins, the Volta Regional Customer Care Officer of Aqua Vitens Rand Limited (AVRL), said at Kpeve on Monday. He said AVRL, which is managing water facilities of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), provides quality water to consumers but some of them keep water in squalid conditions and in open top containers to gather dust and turn round to blame the water producers.

Mr Collins was interacting with 19 students of the Kpeve Senior High School who were taken on guided tour of the Kpeve Water Plant to mark World Water Day.

He said another source of contamination of potable water was channelling of supply lines through drains and messy grounds. The Kpeve Water Station supplies water to Peki, Ho and their environs. Mr Collins commended residents of Ho and its environs for reporting pipe bursts promptly and that revenue performance was good and that complaints from consumers had been minimal, indicating satisfaction with services.

Mr Collins hinted at the formation of "Water Clubs" in schools to educate young people on the need to preserve water. Mr Philip Dwamena-Boateng, the Volta Regional Production Manager who with Mr Daniel Gazele, Station Manager took the students through the production processes, said water production was an area that required huge investments.

Mr Emmanuel Johnson, the Distribution Manager, said potable water supply from Kpeve to Ho and its environs was more than adequate.
