Poor turn-out at the exhibition of the voters' register

Tamale, Aug 11, GNA - The exhibition of the voters' register has shown a very poor turn-out in the Tamale Metropolis with most of the people complaining they are not aware of the exercise.

When the Ghana News Agency visited some of the centres on Tuesday afternoon, the Esther Day Care Centre at the Russia Bungalow had only eight people checking their names, two on Monday and six on Tuesday.

At the T/B VRA Transformer polling station, six people had checked their names.

People did not only complain of poor publicity of the week-long exercise but posters and directional signs to the centres are not visible enough to alert them to the centres.

Mr. Kinsley Larbi, the Deputy Northern Regional Director of the Electoral Commission, told the GNA that the exhibition would enable voters who had registered from 2004 till date to check their names.

He disputed the claims of poor publicity and said there was a lot of publicity prior to the exercise in various mediums including radio and television adding that the ECs van had also gone to some communities to announce the exercise.

Mr. Larbi said registration towards general elections had always attracted huge numbers but people did not attach importance to exhibition exercises.

He appealed to people to come out to check their names.
