A 57-year-old post master of Ghana Post, has appeared before a Fiapre Circuit court for allegedly embezzling GH?97,361.31 belonging to the company at Bechem in the Tano South District.

Humphrey Twum-Barima pleaded not guilty to stealing and was granted GH?100,000 bail to re-appear on September 11.

However, the accused, who could not meet the bail conditions was remanded into prison custody.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mawunyo Nanegbe, prosecuting, told the court presided over by Mr. Benjamin Yaw Osei, that the complainant was the Tano South District Manager of Ghana Post and the accused was the post master at the Bechem Post Office.

He said the accused was responsible for the preparation of Western Union Money Transfers and on October 26, 2011, the complainant conducted a surprise inspection at the office of the accused and detected some anomalies in the company’s accounts.

The prosecutor said the complainant drew the attention of the accused to them but the accused asked the complainant to ignore the anomalies. He, however, became suspicious about the behaviour of the accused and further investigations revealed that the accused had embezzled some monies belonging to the company.

He said personnel from the Brong Ahafo Regional Audit were informed to audit the accounts of the office of the accused and it came out that the accused had embezzled GH?97,361.31, and the matter was reported to the Bechem Police which led to his arrest.
