Bazua (UE), May 19, GNA- Women of Bazua and Binduri in the Bawku Municipality in the Upper East Region, for the past four weeks cannot mill millet, maize and rice locally due to a cut in electricity supply. A recent rainstorm that hit the area destroyed electricity poles resulting in the disruption of economic activities as well as communication with external acquaintances and business partners as batteries of mobile phones have gone dead for days.
Mr Louis Mbum, assemblyman of Bazua, in a telephone interview with the Ghana News Agency on Wednesday, said the absence of electricity was adversely affecting the people of the area. He said the communities could not access potable water because there was no power to pump water saying, it was affecting health and sanitation in the area. He said communal labour was mobilized to support a task force from the Volta River Authority to restore power to the area but after a day's work, the task force did not return. He complained that it was unfair to the people of the area.
Madam Adisa Awuni, a native of Bazua, said her family had gone without food for two nights because she did not have money to travel to Bawku or Zebilla in the Bawku West District to mill grain for the family meal.
