The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has accused former President John Dramani Mahama of creating fear and panic among citizens ahead of the 2020 polls.

Former President John Mahama screened some videos of acts of violence captured by the media at La-Bawaleshie during the 31 January 2019 Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election at a recent meeting with the diplomatic community.

The NPP, in a press conference addressed by its Director of Communications, Yaw Buaben Asamoah said the action of the former President is “a deliberate agenda to infuse a sense of political violence and fear in the country ahead of elections next year.”

“This attempt to create fear of elections going as far as denigrating the country’s image on the international scene does not wash with voters in Ghana,” Mr Asamoah added.

He continued: “Why is the former president desperate for power? Can that desperation be justified by peddling falsehoods about security in Ghana to the international community especially when the former president appears to be the inspiration for such violence with his own party.”

Mr Asamoah further called on the former President and the NDC to cooperate with the Commission of Inquiry set up to probe the shooting incident that occurred during the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election.

“We ask the NDC to strengthen its new-found faith in the police by extending it to an unequivocal endorsement of the commission. It can then encourage the commission to spread its tentacles wide and draw conclusions capable of dealing with the alarming tread of political blackmail,” he said.
