Tema, May 21, GNA - The Prampram Police on Sunday intercepted 67 cartons of narcotics substance believed to be cocaine in addition to 10,000 dollars cash hidden in two vehicles at Old Ningo in the Greater Accra region.

The driver of the vehicle, whose identity was not disclosed, has been placed in custody, pending investigations into the transportation of the cocaine.

Briefing the Ghana News Agency at Tema, the Tema Regional Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Daniel Laryea Odai, said the police at Prampram had information that a Benz bus 711D with registration number GW 1243 D was loading some goods suspected to be narcotic drugs at Awiamu, near Old Ningo and mounted a roadblock for it.

He said on reaching the roadblock, the driver of the bus stopped briefly and sped off after observing that the policemen manning the road check were few and had no standby vehicle.

ACP Odai said with the help of some people, the police chased the bus in a taxi and apprehended it.

During interrogation, the driver told them he was carrying fish but a search on the vehicle revealed narcotic drugs neatly packed in sacks and hidden among cartons of fresh fish.

The Police Commander stated that a picture of a white lady was fixed on top of some smaller parcels in waterproof wrappings. Mr Odai said a further search around the area also revealed an amount of 10,000 dollars hidden in an abandoned Toyota Avensis Saloon car with the registration number GR 1742 X. According to ACP Odai, realizing that drug barons had resorted using Ghana as transit point for their deals, the Ghana Police and its counterparts in France, United Kingdom and the Federal Bureau of Investigations of the United States are seriously tracking down on the menace. He held that Sunday's arrest was the biggest narcotic haul considering the way in which the parcels had been compressed. He intimated that the police would intensify its check along the coastline to clamp down on such criminal activities. 21 May 06
