Private Legal Practitioner, Lawyer Ohene Gyan is appealing to the leadership of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to resort to prayer rather than begin to apportion blame for the woes of the embattled former Chief Executive of COCOBOD, Dr. Stephen Kwabena Opuni.

He advised that instead of grumbling over government’s decision to press criminal charges against him and businessman cum Chief Executive Officer of Zeera Group of Companies, Alhaji Seidu Agongo, they should be scouting for better legal representation.

The Ashanti Regional Branch of the NDC on Wednesday said it is appalled by the exceptional determination of the government to destroy the reputation of a man who had laboured to transform the cocoa sector in Ghana.

A statement issued by the Ashanti Regional Secretary, Raymond Tandoh said:” “We believe Dr. Stephen Opuni is a victim of a growing political culture of hounding predecessors to justify campaign claims of corruption”

But speaking on Kumasi-based Abusua Fm’s ‘Abusua Nkommo’ hosted by Luther King Kwame Adinkra, the legal practitioner described the conduct of the party’s leadership as needless suggesting that at least prayer and a better legal representation is needed for now.

“NDC should pray and look for legal a team for Dr.Stephen Kwabena Opuni”, he advised.

According to a suit filed at an Accra High Court on Wednesday, March 14, 2018, Dr. Opuni and Alhaji Seidu Agongo face-up 27 counts of willfully causing financial loss through to the state through fraud.

Some of the charges include; money laundering, violation of procurement laws and defrauding by false pretenses.

Other portions of the suit read:” Mr. Stephen Kwabena Opuni between November 2014 and November 2015 in Accra in the Greater Accra Region, abetted Seidu Agongo and Agricult Ghana Limited to defraud Ghana COCOBOD of the sum of Ghc 75, 289, 314.72.”

“Stephen Kwabena Opuni on the 10th of October 2014 in Accra, agreed to permit your conduct as the Chief Executive Officer of COCOBOD to be influenced with an amount of Twenty Five Thousand Ghana Cedis (Ghc25,000) from Seidu Agongo”.
