Pressure group Ga-Dangme Concerned Youth has rejected an ethnocentric tag hanged on its neck following its publicly stated vow to resist attempts by President Nana Akufo-Addo to appoint non-indigenes as Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) in the Greater Accra Region.

The group said last week it would oppose any move by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government to appoint any person of non-Ga-Dangme extraction to head the various assemblies in the region.

The spokesperson of the group, Nii Ayaafio Tetteh, speaking to Class News, alleged some persons were pushing the idea that the group was pursuing a tribalistic agenda, an accusation it found worrying.

According to him, the Mills-Mahama government appointed only indigenes to head the assemblies in the Greater Accra Region and wants President Nana Akufo-Addo to take a cue from it.

“The President Mills and Mahama administration did this.

They made sure all their DCEs and MCEs were Ga-Dangmes, so he (Akufo-Addo) should follow the trend; it’s very simple. We are not tribalists.

If we were tribalists, we would not allow non-Ga-Dangmes to become parliamentarians on our land…our land is a cosmopolitan land.

But when you are talking about DCEs and MCEs, it has nothing to do with cosmopolitan. We want people who can fight our agenda for us.

No Ga-Dangme will choose to become DCE or MCE in the Volta Region.

It is a Ga-Dangme who knows our problems. When they chose Kwasi Dzamesi to become chieftaincy minister did we complain? No, but we are talking about DCEs and MCES. The DCEs and MCEs know our problems,” he stated.
