Pregnant recruits dropped from security training - Interior Minister

Interior Minister Mohammed‑Mubarak Muntaka has revealed that some recruits in the ongoing security recruitment exercise became pregnant after passing medical examinations.

Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Monday, August 24, 2026, the minister explained that while medical screenings initially cleared applicants, some later became pregnant during the training period.

He said as a result of this, these recruits have been asked to go home, insisting that they cannot be pregnant and still undergo training.

"The almighty recruitment, thank God, is almost coming to an end. The 10,000 in the first batch are all in school. I know that police in all our six training schools are full. The Ghana Prison Service also have the trainees in place. Ghana National Fire Service have them in place. Ghana Immigration Service," he said.

"And currently what is happening is that they are going to authenticate because of the sheer numbers of persons that we have to go to. One or two people might have slipped through; either their documentation is not right or maybe health‑wise.

"...Because we've already seen people who are already pregnant and we have to send them home. You cannot be pregnant and be there. But remember the time we did the medicals, the person may not be pregnant, but beyond the medicals and the time of going to school, going for training, they are now pregnant. So that's what has been happening," he disclosed.

Muntaka further assured applicants that the recruitment process remains transparent and fair, emphasising that all data of those who successfully passed medical examinations has been preserved.

He explained that the current batch of 10,000 recruits is undergoing six months of training across the security services, after which the next group will be selected from the same pool of medically cleared applicants.

"I want to assure all applicants that His Excellency John Dramani Mahama has given a firm instruction that we keep the whole data of those who have passed medicals. So that those who are in training now, they take about six months. And when they pass out, the next batch will be pulled from the same group that have passed medicals," he noted.
