The Prempeh Assembly Hall in Kumasi has been closed down with immediate effect.

The Mayor of Kumasi, Hon. Kojo Bonsu ordered the closure to make way for the refurbishment of the 67 year old assembly hall which has seen rehabilitation only once in 1969.

Taking the media round the building, the Major lamented the lack of maintainable culture in this country.

He indicated that, the present state of the building, built in 1938 does not befit the image and stature of the city of Kumasi.

Adding that, " Kumasi is where Ghana happens and this assembly hall does not befit that status".

"We need a modern state of the art multi-purpose assembly hall comparable to the best anywhere on the continent" he said.

"Am looking at an assembly hall that can serve the people of this beautiful city in the area of hosting bigger events such as concerts, cinemas, conferences, theater and at the same time serve as a tourism destination capable of raising revenue to the assembly" he stressed.

Hon. Bonsu, charged the contractors, Consar limited to endeavor to raise the status of the hall to the stature of am international edifice.

The GH 1.5 million project is expected to be completed in 6 months.
