President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has praised Ghanaian journalists for their sacrifices and dedication to the nation’s development.
He highlighted the media’s essential role in fostering an informed society, stability, and democratic values, which had driven Ghana’s progress, and encouraged journalists to prepare for the challenges ahead.
“Let us not look back at how far we have come, but also look forward to the future we must build together,” he advocated in an address at the media awards’ ceremony, to climax the Ghana Journalists Association’s (GJA) 75th anniversary, in Accra.
The year-long anniversary is being marked on the theme: “75 Years of Excellence in Journalism: The Role of the Media in Democratic Governance and Elections”.
President Akufo-Addo emphasized that the media has consistently demonstrated resilience, innovation, and a strong commitment to the truth.
“The media is and will continue to be a cornerstone of our democratic journey.
“Your work is essential to the strength of our democracy, the integrity of our elections, and the progress of our nation,” he stated, and appealed to journalists to be resilient in advancing the cause of truth and justice.
The President noted that the nation’s sustainable growth depended on a vibrant media.
“We will continue to build a Ghana where democracy flourishes, and where the media remains as a beacon of hope and freedom for all,” he added.
Regarding ethics, President Akufo-Addo emphasised the importance of the media maintaining objectivity, accuracy, and fairness in their work.
He cautioned, “We cannot allow ourselves to be swayed by sensationalism,” urging the media to prioritise facts over falsehoods.
Charles Abani, the United Nations (UN) Resident Coordinator for Ghana, affirmed that the UN would continue to collaborate with Ghanaian journalists to promote democratic values and good governance.
Yaw Boadu-Ayeboafo, Chairman of the National Media Commission, urged the government to enhance support for state-owned media institutions to help them fulfill their mandates effectively.
Albert Dwumfour, the GJA President, cautioned political parties and their representatives to avoid attacking the media as the country approached the December 7 General Election.
He emphasised that the GJA was dedicated to ensuring the welfare of its members, stating that the media deserved fair compensation for their work.
The media awards ceremony recognized Edward Acquah, a Chief Reporter at the Ghana News Agency, as the GJA/Komla Dumor Most Promising Journalist of the Year.
Over 30 individuals and institutions were honored for their dedicated service to the field.
