Election 2004 gets even more curious as December nears, and the electorate perhaps need a little help to focus.
The President H.E Mr J.A Kufuor is an NPP President, his Party is the NPP, and the NPP Constituency Branch in KEEA has democratically selected an NPP candidate to contest the seat in the December 2004 elections for the NPP in KEEA.
Curiously however the President has insisted on supporting a prospective CPP candidate, a certain Dr P.A . Nduom, and has autocratically set aside the democratic wish of NPP members in KEEA.
Apart from the fact that the President?s actions may be against the NPP constitution, we take this opportunity to remind His Excellency that it was such un-democratic tendencies that lead a large section of the NDC to breakaway to form the National Reform Party.
Being an election year however we can humbly accept the President?s gift horse . A gift horse in the sense that in backing a prospective CPP candidate in KEEA, he sends a clear signal to the country and to NPP voters. A message which says ?? there are good CPP candidates out there, and given the chance they deliver?, a message that says to NPP voters ? if the CPP candidate is more appealing than your candidate , vote for him/her?
The President thus need not travel to all 230 constituencies deciding on which CPP candidates to back, his words in KEEA will do that for him. His endorsement of one prospective CPP candidate should be seen as an endorsement for all CPP candidates indeed his words should be copied and distributed to every CPP campaigner in every constituency up and down the country. Who will argue with the President of the country when he says back the CPP candidate.
NPP members in KEEA must be concerned however about this curious turn of events for they have worked hard raising funds, worked hard canvassing and printing posters for their man, only to be told ?the CPP man is better, support and vote for him? Our only advice to them is to follow the example of the those who left the NDC to form the National Reform Party ? leave and join other parties where democracy still thrives.
We gladly await the next Presidential endorsement of a CPP candidate.
Yours In The Service Of Ghana?s Democracy Nii Armah Akomfrah Chairman
