President Kufuor Challanged to fight Corruption

President Kufuor and his Government have been challenged by a Senior Fellow of the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) to fight corruption at high levels in the country.

Presenting a paper at a round table discussion on “Tackling Elite or Grand Corruption in Ghana”, Professor Yaw Saffu prescribed the establishment of an independent constitutional office of Public Prosecutor and a Freedom of Information Act.

According to him, this Public Prosecutor will not be under the control or direction of any political office holder, adding that a Freedom of Information Act will help the public to expose a public office holder who has made a false declaration of his assets and liabilities.

Professor Saffu said, the two reforms mentioned above together with a Whistleblower Act that protects people who provide the State with needed Information and Intelligence, will probably be enough to obriate any need to establish any anti-corruption commission as had been done in Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia and elsewhere.

He however, doubted the effectiveness of the proposed establishment of an Office of Accountability to be located in the President’s Office.
