President J. A. Kufuor is due to leave for Dakar, Senegal on Wednesday to attend the ECOWAS summit. The summit of West African Heads of State is discussing security, political and socio-economic situation in the sub-region and is also to confirm host, President Abdoulaye Wade as the new Chairman of the grouping.
Outgoing ECOWAS Chairman, Alpha Omar Konare wants the summit to tackle violence in the sub-region and also consolidate the efforts of the 15 member states for the lifting of UN sanctions against Liberia. Ghana’s Dr Mohammed Ibn Chambas is at the summit contesting for the position of ECOWAS Executive Secretary. The mandate of the current Executive Secretary Lasana Kouyate ends this month.
