Mampong-Akwapim (E/R), Feb.3, GNA - President John Agyekum Kufuor on Tuesday inspected progress of work on the 1.5 million dollars private Orthopaedic Hospital at Mampong-Akwapim in the Eastern Region. Mr Bryan Oswald Lowe, an African American from Brooklyn, New York, USA, now based in the town is financing The Kwaku Kunta Kinte Orthpaedic Hospital Complex (known as the 3K Orthpaedic Hospital Complex) project. Mr Lowe is also the founder of International Save Our Souls Society (ISOSS) with its headquarters in Mampong-Akwapim.
President Kufuor made a whistle stop at the hospital on his way to cut the sod for work to begin on the 30-kilometre Pantang - Mamfe section of the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange - Mamfe Road Project at the Mampong-Akwapim.
The road project scheduled for completion within 27 months is estimated at about 171.5 billion cedis with the African Development Bank (AfDB) supporting it with 127.5 billion cedis with the remaining 44 billion cedis coming from the Ghana Government.
Mr Lowe, who conducted President Kufuor round the Hospital, said he decided to establish ISOSS after his first visit to Ghana in 1987, when he saw many people affected with poliomyelitis and decided to offer assistance to save the situation.
He said most of the hospitals in Ghana, did not have beds for the physically challenged people in the society for medical treatment. Mr Lowe said he, therefore, decided to raise funds to construct the Hospital to help solve the problem.
He said the initial 1.5 million dollars was for the civil works and about six million dollars was required to provide equipment for the hospital.
Work on the 200-bed hospital began in October 2001.
