The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has stated that President John Dramani Mahama has promised Alan Kyerematen the founder of the United Party, a “very special place” as Ghana prepares to assume a leadership role within the African Union.

He disclosed this while speaking on behalf of the President at The African Summit convened by Kyerematen in Accra, following Ghana’s endorsement by ECOWAS Heads of State to present President Mahama as the next Chairperson of the African Union in 2027.

According to Ablakwa, the endorsement secured over the weekend positions Ghana to play a more influential role in shaping Africa’s political and socio-economic direction, making the timing of the summit particularly strategic.

“He was endorsed over the weekend by ECOWAS. All the West African presidents endorsed him as the next African Union Chairperson in 2027.

‘So, this convening is very timely, very fortuitous and he will be looking forward to the report so that he can hit the ground running in 2027 when he becomes the Chairperson of the African Union,” channelonenewsonline.com quoted him to have said.

Ablakwa explained that President Mahama considers the ideas and policy recommendations emerging from the summit as critical to Ghana’s continental leadership ambitions.

He added that the President had conveyed a personal message of appreciation to the convener, Alan Kyerematen, for his contribution to African integration efforts.

“And he has asked me to tell our convener, the Honourable John Alan Kyerematen, that he will have a very special place when he becomes AU Chairperson because of the work that he’s doing,” the Foreign Affairs Minister noted.

He further stressed that Ghana’s leadership at the African Union would require strong institutional capacity, credible policy input and extensive expertise, noting that the Centre for Strategic African Development (CENSADEV), established by Kyerematen, would play a key role in supporting that vision.

“So, we are definitely going to need the expertise, the experience, and this very reputable organisation the Honourable John Kyeremanten has put together as Ghana prepares to assume the leadership of the African Union,” he added.

Ablakwa observed that the summit comes at a critical moment for the continent, as Africa navigates both significant opportunities and persistent constraints.

“Ladies and gentlemen, we gather at a moment of both extraordinary promise and sovereign reality,” he stated.

The African Summit is being held under the theme “Building A New United Africa”, with discussions focused on translating continental leadership into concrete economic growth and development outcomes.
