President Mills not happy about politics of insults

Tema, Oct 28, GNA- President John Evans Atta Mills expressed concern on the resurfacing of insults and impolite language on the nation's political landscape in recent times.

He said the insults would not help the national development process, neither were they a healthy development in the upbringing of the Ghanaian child in the midst such adult vulgarities. The nation has in recent weeks been hit by vituperations from personalities from the various political persuasions, with the mass media spending chunks of airtime and pages discussing the offensive language.

President Mills, who recently had cause to ask the media to be guided by their conscience in the publication of materials, used the occasion of the commissioning of the refurbished 10.4 kilometre Accra-Tema railway line and service to speak against the phenomenon that is negatively affecting the nation.

The President said a careful observation of discussion in the mass media paints a picture a country at war with itself, and wondered of the insults would produce potable water, the peace and harmony the nation needed for it to develop.

"I find it very difficult to understand what we are fighting about. Hurling insults at one another will not help. What examples are we setting for our children, after paying huge sums of money to send them to top schools, have extra classes", President Mills asked. He stressed the importance of age-long traditional values and virtues of courtesy, decorum and respect, adding that "a nation that has no discipline is a nation on the way to destruction."

President Mills said: "Let's unite to build our nation" and stressed unity and oneness to take advantage of the recent development assistance from China and Japan to maximize the nation's development process.

According to the President, in spite of the political differences, development remained one phenomenon, and Ghana would be the ultimate winner if there was unity among the people. President Mills called on Ghanaians to forge ahead of unity and working together for the Good Lord to bless the nation abundantly.
