President John Atta Mills, confident of winning the 2012 presidential election on Thursday urged Ghanaians to continue having faith in the ruling National Democratic Congress(NDC).
He was emphatic the NDC would retain power, and have the second term to continue with the good work it has so far achieved.
Addressing the Chiefs and people of the Aflao traditional area at Agblekpi in the Volta region, President Mills declared “we are not ending after four years, so continue to have faith in us”.
President Mills, who is on a-day’s working visit to the Volta Region, assured the people that government would address their problems.
Togbe Amenya Fiti V, Paramount Chief of Aflao said the elevation of Aflao to the status of a Municipality is the prime concern of the people.
Government last December announced the creation of Aflao as a Municipality among 42 new Districts, but that of Aflao was said to have been left out when the proposed new Districts were been presented to parliament.
This trigged a reaction by the chiefs and people of the area.
Other concerns raised by the people included unemployment, absent of Senior High School in the area, harassment by security men at the border post, the need for the improvement of the road infrastructure and environmental challenges.
In responds, President Mills indicated that it was unfortunate that some people wanted to create the impression that the NDC has left the people to their fate, and wondered why the government would do that when it had received massive support and people have solidly stood behind the government all this while.
He said the achievements of government are visible throughout the country within the past three years when compared with what others archived in eight years.
According to the President, these achievements have been detailed in the green book launched recently in Accra.
The President again reiterated that, with persons like Fifi Kwetey as Deputy Minister of Finance and Economic Planning, who comes from the area and Mr Albert Ziga, Member of Parliament for Ketu South in government, there was no way the government would turn its back on the people.
Speaking on the petition by the chiefs and people to raise Aflao to a Municipality status, the President said, that was not something; he could order but appealed to the people to let their petition go through the necessary legislative procedures.
President Mills assured the people that government was working seriously on their request and added that with the renewal of the mandate of the NDC, it would allow government to execute what has been promised them.
President Mills re-assured the people that their demand would be met and accepted a gift from the chiefs as a symbol of making good of his words, after he had donated a quantity of drinks to them.
Early, President Mills visited the Akatsi Roman Catholic Junior High School biometric registration centre to inspect the progress of the registration process.
President Mills commended the people for turning up and waiting to register, so they could vote.
He however warned against double registration.
As he travelled through the towns and villages of the Ketu South District of the Region, party faithful, supporters and sympathisers of the party, dressed in party T-shirts and party colours of red, green, black and white, lined the street and excitedly waved at the President and his entourage.**
