President expresses worry about poor sanitation in Upper East Region

Zabugu-Natinga (UER), March 26, GNA - President John Evans Atta Mills on Saturday expressed worry about poor sanitary practices in the upper East Region.

He, therefore, directed all Municipal and District Chief Executives in the Region to take up the issue of environmental protection seriously, especially the littering of polythene bags and other waste material .

The President, who was on the second day of his three-day working visit to the Region, said he had noticed unpleasant sight of litter all over the place.

President Mills urged the Chief Executives to focus more on the general sanitation at towns and communities and not to let the sanitary situation get out of control. President Mills gave the directive when he inaugurated 30 boreholes at Zabugu-Natinga, near Bawku.

It formed part of a 791-borehole project for the Region in which the Bawku area would get 100 boreholes. President Mills said the project was funded by government in fulfilment of its quest to ensure that every Ghanaian had safe drinking water.

He said that the Government had done so much by providing infrastructure and other facilities in various parts of the Region and asked the Chief Executives to let the people know through the media what was being done for them. President Mills said government was improving education, citing the implementing of crash programme to provide educational infrastructure thereby reducing the number of classes under trees in the region.

He also said that second cycle institutions were benefiting from more that 90 projects, comprising the building of dormitories, teachers' quarters, classroom blocks, assembly halls, laboratories, and the provision of vehicles to enhance supervision of teaching and administration work among others. The President said the Capitation Grant, School Feeding Programme, Free Exercise Books and Uniform Project were being expanded to increase enrollment in the first and cycle schools. 26 March 11
