President of 73rd session of UN General Assembly arrives in Accra

Madam María Fernanda Espinosa Garcés, the President of the 73rd Session of the United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday arrived in Accra for a four-day official visit.

She was met on arrival by Professor George Gyan-Baffour, the Minister of Planning, and other government officials such as Madam Martha Ama Akyaa Pobee, Ghana’s Permanent Representative to the UN; and Dr Eugene Owusu, Special Adviser to the President on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Also, at the Kotoka International Airport to welcome Madam Espinosa was Sylvia Lopez-Ekra, Acting UN Resident Coordinator in Ghana.

Madam Espinosa was accompanied by Ambassador Kwabena Osei-Danquah Chef de Cabinet to the President of the 73rd Session of United Nations General Assembly.

Madam Espinosa’s visit to Ghana seeks to strengthen political support and cooperation with the UN General Assembly.

While in Ghana, Madam Espinosa would hold bilateral meetings with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Professor Aaron Mike Ocquaye, the Speaker of Parliament and the Leadership of Parliament

Others would be Madam Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, the High-Level Ministerial Committee on SDGs, representatives of civil society and UN officials.

Madam Espinosa would also pay a courtesy call on the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II in Manhyia, Kumasi.

Madam Espinosa is the first woman from Latin America to become the President of the UN General Assembly.

She is the fourth woman to lead the body in 73 years of UN history.
