Presidential Convoy Accident: Death toll increases

The death toll in Sunday's motor accident involving the presidential convey from Takoradi and a Gomoa-Potsin-Winneba bound taxi cab rose to four on Monday following the death of Malam Abiba Sumaila, a 40-year-old trader of Gomoa-Potsin.

The accident had already claimed the lives of three young men whose names were simply given as Asare, Kweku and Kwesi, all fitters based in Aframoney, in the Nyamekye Motor-way area, Accra.


Their bodies have been deposited at the Winneba Government Hospital mortuary for autopsy.


Among seriously injured persons who have been admitted to the Winneba Government Hospital were, Mr J. Kobina, also a fitter and driver of the taxi cab, Miss Lydia Cudjoe, 23, and Miss Ekua Hawa, 28, both citizens of Gomoa-Potsin.


Mr. Kobina, who sustained serious head injuries had since yesterday been in comma, and according to Dr. A.K. Dzedzegbe of the Winneba Government Hospital who is handling the accident victims, efforts are under-way to transfer Kobina to Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital for further medical attention.

Meanwhile investigations have been intensified to find the cause of the accident.


Last Sunday, the tax cab on which the nine persons were travelling from omoa-Potsin town to Pomadze, near Winneba Junction, was involved in a fatal ccident with the vehicle carrying the securitymen leading President J.A. ufuor from Sekondi to Accra, on the Potsin-Junction-Winneba Junction road.


President Kufuor and his entourage were returning from the Western egion after the opening of the National Arts and Culture Festival in ekondi at the weekend, when the incident occurred.
