Presidential Convoy crash: 'There was no oxygen in the ambulance' – Alex Tetteh

Alex Tetteh, President of Citizen Eye Ghana, has claimed that there was no oxygen in the ambulance vehicle in the presidential convoy, one of which was involved in a crash on Sunday, May 19, 2024.

According to Alex Tetteh, who indicated that he was at the scene of the crash, the presidential driver who lost his life in the accident could have survived if there had been oxygen in the ambulance.

He said that the police officers and soldiers in the convoy looked on helplessly as their colleague died.

He could not understand why there would be no oxygen in the convoy that was supposed to be transporting the president of the nation.

“An ambulance belonging to the pastor with many members, Adom Kyei, was used to transport the driver of the Kia Rhino and his mate. The police and the soldiers were giving him (the driver of the Kia Rhino) water to drink and I said you are giving him water but you’re looking on as your own person dies.

"Do you know the funny thing? Officials of the Jubilee House, the protocol service, and national security should hang their heads in shame; the car that was being used as an ambulance in the presidential convoy did not have even one (tank of) oxygen," he said in Twi.

He added, “If there had been oxygen, the man could have survived. It is a shame for the Jubilee House, the protocol service, and national security.”

A vehicle in the presidential convoy was reported to have crashed with a Kia Rhino on Sunday.

The Office of the President, in a statement issued subsequently, confirmed reports of the crash but stated that several vehicles in the presidential convoy were involved in a crash.

"Several vehicles belonging to the President’s convoy were involved in a fatal accident along the Bunso-Akyem Asafo stretch of the Accra-Kumasi Highway," the statement read in part.

The presidency disclosed that one of the drivers of its vehicle, a Toyota Land Cruiser, died in the crash.

"Tragically, one of the drivers, Mr. Kwesi Atta, has lost his life. Additionally, several close protection and police officers from the President's security detail have sustained varying degrees of injuries and received initial treatment at the Suhum Government Hospital.

"The injured persons are currently being evacuated to the University of Ghana Medical Centre for further treatment and observation," the statement disclosed.
