Presidential Wave Angers Workers

Wed, 26 Feb 2003 Source: Joy Online

President John Agyekum Kufuor’s convoy overtook demonstrating Accra workers on Tuesday as they sang their disappointment with his government. The President who was on his way to the Castle waved to the aggrieved workers in apparent recognition of their peaceful demonstration.

But the fact that he did not stop to show ''some fatherly concern'' did not go down well with them.

The workers protesting the government’s unilateral announcement of the new minimum wage of ?9,000 sang songs like

    ''Kufuor adaada me aaa ..''
''loser eee loser, Kufuor you go lose ooo loser'' and
    ''Kufuor ?9,000 yempe''

They also carried placards some of which read
    ''9,000 is for cabinet members''
    ''Pay more and win votes''
''What is good for the Ministers is also good for workers of Ghana''
    ''Treat labour with dignity'' and
''We also have children to educate.''

Others read
    ''JAK remember your promises''
JAK, you are killing us softly – 2004 is near''
''NDC – come and save you workers.''
The demonstration which started at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle ended at the Ministry of Employment and Manpower where the workers presented a resolution to the Minister. The Minister assured the workers that she would relay their grievances to the appropriate quarters.
