Opposition challenger John Kufuor is ahead in Ghana's presidential race with results from 192 out of 200 constituences available but a run-off may be necessary, electoral commission sources said on Sunday.

The sources told Reuters that Kufuor, running for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), had 48.5 percent of the vote against 44.5 percent for the country's current vice president, John Atta Mills, of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The rest of the votes are shared between five other candidates.

A candidate needs more than 50 percent to win in the first round. Any second round would be contested by the two candidates with most votes.

Official results already published from just over half the constituencies give Kufuor 52.81 percent against 41.02 percent for Mills. Voting was on Thursday.
