The Prestige Society of Chicago, a ladies only non-profit organization based in Chicago donated mattresses and bed sheets to the Polyclinic wing of the Korle-Bu teaching hospital in Accra. The donation includes 36 bed sheets for children, 48 bed sheets for adults and 12 mattresses each for both adults and children.
The SIX MILLION Cedis donation was hurriedly organized by the ladies only membership non-profit club when one of their members saw the deplorable conditions of the Polyclinic whilst visiting a patient in the Policlinic.
The items presented on behalf of the Prestige Society by a member of the Prestige Club Kate Annan.
In his letter of acceptance, Dr. David Nortey, head of the Polyclinic department, stated ?I really appreciate your thoughtfulness to support us and wish to express our heartfelt appreciation to the society for its kind gesture. It would really go a long way to supplement our effort of providing quality services to our patients.?
Dr. Nortey appealed to the Society and other non-profit organizations or individuals to support the Policlinic by donating the following:
Bed Sheets Wheel Chairs Drip Stands Suction Machines Electronic Thermometers Electronic Sphygmomanometers and Diagnostic Sets
It must be noted that less than 20 years ago, the Korle-Bu teaching Hospital and its Polyclinic wing were well equipped with beds, blankets, bed sheets, wheel Chairs etc,. Staff pilfering, lack of maintenance and total neglect by the authorities has resulted in severe shortage or nonexistence of hospital essentials such as bed sheets, wheel chairs etc.
Nowadays, patients are required most of the time to bring their own bed sheets, whilst others sleep on bare hospital floors, chairs, tables or dilapidated mattresses without sheets whilst awaiting medical care! The present crops of management in the hospitals have to be congratulated for reversing the trend of pilferage and putting to good use items donated.
