The National Democratic Congress (NDC) COVID-19 Technical Response Team has opined that the prevalence and speed of the spread of Covid-19 in Ghana remains a clear and present danger.

According to the team, the major shortfalls in broad strategic public health education remain apparent.

"This is more so in regional communities and even in current known hotspots in urban communities across the country. A well executed plan ought to have translated into better results rather than the ongoing lack of change in behaviour and attendant higher numbers of cases occurring in increasingly shorter periods of time,” a statement issued and signed by the Chairman Prosper Bani said.

The team is also recommending the urgent need to incorporate mass testing into a holistic strategy to have a full and accurate picture of the number of cases in the country.

It is also hoping the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) would completing its findings into the rapid test kits developed by the Kwame University of Science and Technology (KNUST) to allow large scale community screening to be feasible and efficient.

The statement continued: "For the foreseeable future, the NDC Technical Team strongly urges Government to maintain and more rigorously enforce all certified World Health Organization(WHO) protocols geared towards reducing the spread of infections.

Any attempt to lift restrictions on all forms of public gatherings, in our view, is extremely premature and risky at this stage of the virus’ evolution in Ghana. In addition, our borders should also remain closed at this time.

The NDC Technical Team has highlighted in all its recommendations to Government the desperate need to secure strategic supplies of Covid-19- related equipment and PPEs for equitable distribution at a national level. Indeed, the flagbearer of the NDC continues to make donations to medical facilities around the country, to compliment national public and private sector efforts to close the obvious gaps that remain to date. It is again our recommendation, that Government take a strategic view to responding to our country’s frontline and ancillary health worker heroes in this regard.

The NDC Technical Response Team continues to remain available to offer sound non-partisan advice to government and all Ghanaians in support of this collective fight to defeat Covid-19 in our beloved country,” it concluded.
