President John Dramani Mahama on Monday, November 11, 2013 inaugurated a new Police Council to be chaired by Vice President Paa Kwesi Bekoe Amissah-Arthur.

The members of the Council are: Minister for the Interior, Kwesi Ahwoi, Inspector General of Police Mohammed Alhassan, Deputy Attorney General, Dr. Dominic Ayine, Commissioner of Police Ms. Rose Atinga Bio, Commissioner of Police Kwasi Nkansah (Rtd.), Inspector Charles Obiri Yeboah, Mrs. Nancy Amarteifio, Rev. Dr. Lartey Lawson and Alhaji Salifu Osman.

President Mahama commended the police administration “for the good work they have done”.

“The administration under the distinct leadership of the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Ahmed Alhassan, has aptly demonstrated that the Police have visionary leaders to bring about the needed reformation in the Service,” he remarked.

“With the introduction of the visible concept of policing and other important strategies, the administration has been able to carry on from its reactive nature to a more proactive one,” he noted.

President Mahama, who had once chaired the Council during his tenure as Vice President, admitted to challenges facing the Service.

“Strategic leadership is, therefore, the key to resolution of most seemingly difficult challenges,” he recommended.

The Police Council is enjoined by Article 203 of the 1992 Constitution to, among other things, advice government on the activities of the Police Service, conditions of service, promotions, pensions and gratuities.
