For Ghana’s Membership Of African Commission On Human & Peoples Rights

As part of his deliberations with the Government of South Africa, His Excellency President John Evans Atta Mills has asked South Africa to support Ghana’s bid to pick up a slot on the African Commission on Human & People’s Rights headquartered in Banjul, Gambia.

Before his closed door meeting with Vice President of South Africa, Kgaleme Mothlanthe, to discuss matters bordering on the growth path of the African Union (AU), President Atta Mills said that Ghana is seeking to have a solid representation on the Commission and South Africa’s support would be extremely appreciated.

According to President Atta Mills, Ghana considers the work of the Commission to be very critical hence the push to get a representation.

According to President Atta Mills, the main driving force behind his push to get Ghana represented on the Commission is because he wants a Ghanaian woman to be the one to represent the nation.

“I have a lot of confidence in Ghanaian women and it would be a strong case for them if we are able to get one of them to represent the nation on the Commission” said President Atta Mills.

“My Administration will continue to work hard to give Ghanaian women a lot of space to contribute to building a Better Ghana and we will not relent in this effort” President Atta Mills added.

On his part, Vice President Kgalema Mothlanthe commended President Atta Mills for his strong desire to project Ghanaian women and said he will convey the message to President Jacob Zuma and was confident that Ghana’s request will be favourably considered.
