Madam Mary Boatemaa Marfo, District Chief Executive (DCE) for Sekyere East, has said there is the need for district assemblies to prioritize the rehabilitation and improvement of road networks.

This would help to open up rural communities and promote sustained agricultural production to boost food security.

She said the deplorable road networks in rural communities has over the years been the cause of post-harvest losses and poor market for farm produce resulting in low incomes for farmers and increased poverty among people in rural communities.

It is important for district assemblies to prioritize feeder road improvement to aid the transportation of food and other farm produce from the farming communities to market centres.

Madam Marfo made the call through the Ghana News Agency at Ahensan, after touring and inspecting ongoing road rehabilitation works in some communities in the district.

The projects included a 13.5km Asokore-Ahensan-Naaman road and the Ahensan-Senchi, road which passes through Attakrom and Okaikrom communities.

Others were the 27km Effiduase-Ntumkumso-Tetekaaso road and the five km principal streets rehabilitation in the Effiduase town.

The road projects which started in September this year were expected to be completed early next year.

Madam Marfo said the reconstruction of the roads were part of the assembly and government’s commitment to improve living conditions in the rural areas and bridge the socio-economic gabs in those areas.

It is also aimed at improving the livelihoods and incomes of farmers, reduce poverty, enhance food security and achieve the target goals of the Planting for Food and Jobs and Planting for Exports and Rural Development programmes of the government.

Mr Sampson Awuah, the District Engineer urged the community members and road users to cooperate with the contractors to ensure the successful execution of the projects and avoid accidents.
