Aside of the three notorious armed robbers who scaled the walls in a phenomenal escape from the Nsawam Medium Security Prisons last week another two convict prisoners walked away without pursuit at the Prisons Headquarters last Wednesday.
The two Prisoners who were from James Camp Prisons were sent to the headquarters to work, but were abandoned when a Chief Officer allegedly sent their warder on an errand.
"You see, the Chief Officer negligently sent the escorting officer leaving the prisoners alone. So the thing is that they just walked away," a source within the Prison Service told The Chronicle yesterday.
Mr. Mark K. Atsu Agbosu, Superintendent of Prisons, in charge of the Public Relations Directorate of the Prisons Service said in an interview that the James Camp prison authorities had already began questioning officials about the circumstances, which led to the escape.
According to him, the normal procedure within the Prison service was that when an incident like that occurred, the outfit responsible for the prisoners would initiate their investigations and submit their findings to the appropriate authority for the necessary action to be taken.
"For now there is no report like that, but when adverse findings are made against an officer, he will be dealt with according to the prescriptions of the Prisons Service".
Last week, a notorious armed robber and jail breaker, Kofi Owusu and two others, both Liberians scaled the walls of the prisons service aided by a ladder that was negligently left resting on the wall by prison officers who were tasked to fix barbed wire on the prison walls.
Kofi Owusu, credited with an amazing criminal record, is said to have been involved in several armed robberies in the Greater Accra and Ashanti regions but was arrested by the Police on July 9, 2003.
According to Police sources, the notorious armed robber had been involved in robberies in Kumawu in the Ashanti region and Hilltop, Teshie Tsui Bleoo and Baatsona all in Accra.
Luck was on Kofi, Owusu's side once again when he managed to escape from prison custody after stealing the keys to his handcuffs.
Police sources expressing displeasure at the rampant escapes at the Prisons told The Chronicle that it had taken them a lot of effort and resources to arrest and successfully prosecute these criminals whom they described as a "risk to society."
Owusu, the source said, was a very violent armed robber until he was grabbed during a robbery incident at Pobiman where two of his crime mates lost their lives in an exchange of fire with the police.
Owusu escaped in the course of the shoot-out but was later arrested following a tip off at the Aflao Police Post.
Meanwhile, The Chronicle has learnt that the two Liberians have been re-captured by a prison officer by name, Corporal Bimpong but slippery Owusu remains at large.
