The decision by the Ghana Police Service to pull out of Donkorkrom over the torching and destruction of its post in the town by angry residents on Thursday is not a sound action to take, security analyst Dr Kwesi Aning has said.

“It is a wrong move by the police because it’s not the totality of the citizens and residents of Donkorkrom who did whatever took place,” the Head of Research at the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping and Training Centre said.

“Even if it is 10 people who are innocent, those ten people deserve protection from the police because by not getting involved in this action, they would be perceived by the generality of the people in the town as being against their action and their lives may be in danger.”

At a press conference addressed by COP Prosper Ablorh, Director of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service, the police said they would only send officers back to the town after the residents rebuild the decimated post.

Angry locals torched the police post on Thursday during a rowdy protest against the police in connection with the escape of three robbery suspects, including two police officers, who had earlier been arrested in connection with a botched heist of a GCB Bank bullion van at Maame Krobo in the Afram Plains South District of the Eastern Region.

The three have subsequently been arrested and are being prepared for court. The driver of the bullion van got killed in the robbery attack.
