Samuel Atta Mills, MP for Komenda Edina Eguafo Abrem
The Local Government Ministry should privatise the management of government bungalows so as to stop low rent charges, Member of Parliament (MP) for Komenda Edina Eguafo Abrem, Samuel Atta Mills, has suggested.
This follows a revelation at the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) sitting in Ho that some Assemblies, including the Kadjebi District Assembly, charge as low as GHS14 as rent for a two-bedroom bungalow.
Speaking in an interview with Class News, Mr Mills said privatisation is the only way government bungalows can be saved from collapsing, given the poor maintenance culture of the various assemblies.
“The Assemblies are not equipped to be renters. What government needs to do is to sub-lease these rentals or maintenance of these buildings to somebody else, let them maintain these buildings and then they could fix a percentage on what employees could pay,” he indicated.
For him, undue pressure is being placed on the Assemblies as they are not professionals to manage such facilities.
