Privileges committee delays report on Ken Agyapong’s contempt case

Parliament has rescheduled to tomorrow, Wednesday, February 13, 2019 the hearing of the report by the Privileges Committee on the contemptuous remarks allegedly made by the Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong.

The Chairman of the Committee, Joseph Osei-Owusu observed that the report was not ready as at the time the motion was moved and that the committee was considering hearing the second matter brought against the lawmaker so a full report could be presented to the House.

He thus intimated that the committee was yearning to put together the two reports and present it tomorrow.

“Mr. Speaker this motion was listed much earlier but left the order paper for some time. And subsequently, another matter involving the same honourable member was referred to the committee. So leadership was considering that perhaps we could finish with the two and present the report together,” he said.

Prof. Mike Aaron Oquaye ruled that, the committee should present their report on Mr. Agyapong’s first case, which was filed by the Minority Chief Whip and a Member of Parliament for Asawase, Muntaka Mubarak Mohammed on Wednesday, 13th February, 2019.

In July last year, Mr. Agyapong reportedly described Parliament as “useless” for having Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu as its Majority leader.

The comments compelled the Minority Chief whip, Muntaka Mubarak, to file a motion that led to Kennedy Agyapong been referred to the Privileges Committee.

Reports say some 10 members of the committee have voted for Mr. Agyapong to be suspended while another 10 have also voted for him to be reprimanded. One person, however, abstained from voting.
