Some members of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly(KMA) wants immediate past Mayor, Kojo Bonsu investigated over alleged financial malfeasance in the construction of the Rattray park.

Kojo Bonsu who had for the past weeks suffered intense pressure from Asanteman Traditional council for him to leave office on the charge of gross insubordination to traditional authorities only tendered in his resignation Tuesday, July 12, 2016 as Chief Executive of the Assembly.

The Assembly member for Abusua Krowa Electoral Area, Maxwell Ofosu Boakye in an interview with Accra-based Citi FM said Kojo Bonsu in spite of his resignation must be probed on how he expended resources towards the construction of the Rattray Park facility cited in the garden city.

“As we speak, we’ve petitioned EOCO on a number of issues but because he was in authority he was able to bull doze his way through and till date EOCO has not been able to come out with its findings. There are other issues that we will follow up because we still have our documents intact.

“For instance the Rattray park that he constructed – we didn’t buy the land, the land was a property of the KMA so we didn’t have to buy it. And according to him, he spent a whopping sum of 17 million Ghana cedis. It dosen’t warrant that amount,” he challenged.

Background

Kojo Bonsu has recently come under intense pressure from the Council for disrespecting them after he unilaterally removed the Chief of Amoaman, Nana Agyenim Boateng, who was Otumfour’s representative on the board of the Kajetia Market project, which is currently under construction without informing the king about his action.

Otumfuo nominated the chief to represent him after issues of corruption and embezzlement of funds was leveled against Kojo Bonsu. The project has become a centre of controversy in recent times after claims that the Mayor had allegedly inflated prices of shops in the yet-to-be completed Project.

The Asanteman Council, in demonstrating its level of annoyance over the lack of respect for the Great King about a fortnight ago, slaughtered a sheep and summoned the KMA Boss to appear before the Council last Monday to answer certain queries brought against him. He however failed to turn up claiming he was sick, and rather had the Regional Minister, Alexander Ackon represent him.

The Chiefs considered his inability to appear before them as being disrespectful to them.

President John Mahama last week visited the Ashanti Region for a crunch meeting over the continuous stand off between the Kojo Bonsu and the Manhyia Palace.

He met with the Regional Coordinating Council to speak to the ongoing issue.

President Mahama has also met key officials of the ruling National Democratic Congress to seek their thoughts on a possible replacement for Mr Bonsu.

The Asanteman Council yesterday (Monday) issued a one-week ultimatum to President Mahama to remove Kojo Bonsu from office as they are unable to work with him.

But Kojo Bonsu left office yesterday following the tons of problems he was caught up with lately in his office.
