Probity and accountability have been ‘thrown out’ under the NPP – Anyidoho

Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Koku Anyidoho has accused the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) of plunging the country into a devastating state of corruption and disorder by throwing out the principles of probity, truthfulness and accountability which Former President Jerry John Rawlings and his administration struggled to earn for Ghana through the June 4 revolution in 1979.

It is evident he says, how much disregard the incumbent government has for such moral values, considering how much corruption, malfeasance and impudence can be traced to them even within a space of just 6-7 months of their reign in power.

“The fact that Jesus Christ did not succeed in converting every soul before his ascension does not mean that Christianity does not exist. June 4 came to establish certain principles namely probity and accountability. Today, probity and accountability especially under this NPP administration within 6 to 7 months, have been thrown out of the window, it doesn’t mean that June 4th did not stand for something”, he said in an interview with Ghanaweb.

Mr. Anyidoho however maintained that the core values of the revolution, which fought against corruption and bad governance in the country still stands and is very much upheld by the NDC's leadership.

“We will continue to reiterate the values of June 4 because as a political party, the National Democratic Congress does not shy away from its June 4 antecedents, in fact if you look at our constitution, the holidays numerated there as the NDC holidays, we have June 4th as accountability day so we still hold on to the tenets and we’ll continue to strive; this generation, future generations, hoping that whatever began on the 4th of June 1979 is not allowed to rot away. The NDC still values the core principles of June 4.

The June 4th Revolution was a violent uprising in Ghana in 1979 that arose out of a combination of corruption, bad governance, frustration among the general public, and lack of discipline and frustrations within the Ghanaian army.

The event is marked annually by the NDC to commemorate the revolution and the transformation it brought to this country.

The Revolutionary Lecture Series was launched last year as part of activities to commemorate the day and and the second lecture came off Thursday May 31 at the National Theatre in Accra. The lecture precedes durbar of cadres and revolutionaries at the Madina Social Welfare School Park on Monday, June 4 at 10am. The durbar which will be addressed by the leader of the revolution, Flt. Lt. Jerry John Rawlings will be under the theme: Re-organising Towards The Core Values.
