Kenyasi (B/A), Feb. 10 GNA - Mr. Yaw Manu Yeboah, Asutifi District Director of Education, has noted that problems in basic schools were due to the inadequate facilities at nurseries and kindergartens. He said the situation did not help in the systematic training of toddlers for the basic schools, as children of different ages crowded in primary one, making teaching very difficult.

Mr. Manu Yeboah therefore appealed for the provision of adequate facilities at such pre-school institutions.

He was addressing a one-day review workshop at Kenyasi in the district attended by Parent Teacher Association (PTA), School Management Committees (SMC), traditional leaders, headteachers and Circuit Supervisors in the district.

The workshop, which was under the auspices of Action Aid Ghana (ACTIONAID) an NGO, was to assess the impact of the NGO's intervention in education in the district to enable the organization to re-design its strategies towards a more pragmatic approach.

Mr. Manu Yeboah said even though the District placed 12th among the 110 districts in the results of last year's Basic Education Certificate Examinations (BECE), "there is still more to be done in terms of human and material resources to push the district to a more appreciable level on the educational ladder".

A programme officer of ACTIONAID, Mr. Joseph Boakye, said the NGO had plans to improve not only the academic performance of schools in the district but also to encourage parents to send and maintain their children in school.

He said ACTIONAID had in this direction put in place a well-structured micro-financing project where parents could enjoy loan facilities in cooperative societies.

The programme officer called on SMCs, PTAs and teachers to give of their best to make the intervention a success.

The participants pledged to work to sustain the efforts of the NGO and called on parents to avoid spending their resources on funerals and other social activities and rather to concentrate on offering quality education to their children.

They thanked ACTIONAID and all other NGOs and Agencies working to complement the efforts of the Ghana Education Service in the District.
