“He didn’t do well, NPP was celebrating 21 years and so what stopped him from talking about what the NPP has done; what brought about the NPP,” snapped James Kwabena Bonfeh, popularly known as Kabila.

Kabila, former National Youth Organiser of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) was referring to Prof. Mike Ocquaye’s assertion that J.B. Danquah, rather than Kwame Nkrumah, founded Ghana.

The former presidential aspirant of the main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) said; “Ghana’s Famous Declaration [of self emancipation] was made in 1947 by Danquah (who the British came to declare as the Doyen of Gold Coast politicians). Nkrumah was not in the country at all”

This issue sparked controversy, especially within the CPP and others who strongly believed that Nkrumah was the true founder of Ghana.

Professor Agyeman Badu Akosa, a member of the CPP, said Kwame Nkrumah was determined to decolonize Ghana and Africa, and he did just that.

“As far as we are concerned, we know who found this country and that is Kwame Nkrumah”.

Samia Nkrumah, chairman of the CPP and daughter of Kwame Nkrumah insisted that her father is the original founder of Ghana, but, however, conceded that some other individuals played roles in the eventual liberation of Ghana from colonial rule.

Adding his voice to it on Monday’s edition of the "Kokrokoo" programme, Kabila strongly disagreed with Prof Mike Ocquaye; indicating that ‘there is no argument’ as far as the founder of Ghana is concerned.

“Kwame Nkrumah founded Ghana and there is no argument about it. Prof. Mike Ocquaye’s assertion that JB Danquah brought about the name Ghana is a lie. He is a professor of history, but I bet to differ. Sometimes our intellectuals selectively distort facts and figures...I thought after the national reconciliation, the noise and lies by the UP tradition against CPP will end, but unfortunately, Prof Mike Ocquaye wants to continue. Please this country’s history is not in one head. Prof Mike Ocquaye should spare us”.
