Professor Emmanuel Osei Sarpong has been appointed Acting Director-General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), following the removal of Yaw Ampofo Ankrah from the position.

Professor Sarpong is an academic and sports administrator with experience in physical education, sports science and higher education leadership.

His appointment brings him back to the NSA, having previously served as a member of the Authority’s Governing Board, where he represented persons in sports development.

The Governing Board was dissolved by President John Dramani Mahama in September 2026 as part of changes to the leadership of the Authority.

Professor Sarpong’s appointment comes at a time when the NSA is facing scrutiny over the management and maintenance of sporting facilities, as well as broader concerns about the administration of sports in the country.

As Acting Director-General, he is expected to oversee the Authority’s operations and work with stakeholders across the sports sector to support the management of Ghana’s sporting infrastructure and the development of sports.

The NSA is responsible for the development, management and maintenance of sports facilities and infrastructure, as well as supporting the organisation and promotion of sporting activities across the country.

Professor Sarpong’s background in sports science and education is expected to inform his work at the Authority as he takes charge of its administration.

His appointment follows the removal of Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, whose tenure as Director-General ended amid scrutiny over an alleged visa facilitation arrangement linked to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The NSA has denied authorising any arrangement to collect money from individuals seeking visa or travel assistance for the tournament and has said its legal team is cooperating with investigations into the matter.

Professor Sarpong will therefore take over the leadership of the Authority at a period of heightened public attention on the management of Ghana’s sports sector and the operations of the NSA.
