The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Prof. John Atta Mills, seemed not to be taking chances this time around. After the 2000 drubbing at the polls by current President, John Agyekum Kufuor; a defeat many NDC faithful said was mainly due to the late Kick – off of Prof. Mills’ campaign, Prof. Mills has started in earnest his campaign, 18 clear months before the December 2004 elections.

Prof. Mills who kicked off his campaign in the Central Region, his home region, assuaged the minds of NDC supporters who might have been swayed off by the recent jail term imposed on two of the party’s stalwarts- Kwame Preprah, former Minister of Finance and Ibrahim Adam, former Minister of Agriculture.

He took a serious swipe at trial judge, retired Supreme Court Judge, Justice Kwame Afreh, saying the two former Ministers did not cause any financial loss to the state as was stated by Justice Afreh in his judgement, but indeed only stood in as guarantors for American investor, Mrs. Juliet Renie Cotton for the establishment of rice factory at Aveyime in the Volta Region.

He further explained that the two former state officials agreed to help Cotton because they (convicted officials) found the project to be viable.

Prof. Atta Mills disclosed this at a meeting at Agona Swedru last week where he formerly introduced himself to some party members and sympathizers after his re-election as the flagbearer of the NDC for the 2004 elections.
