Proliferation of Obscene And Explicit Pornographic Newspapers

Sun, 7 Apr 2002 Source: Accra Mail

The attention of the National Media Commission has been drawn to publications in some newspapers and magazines of obscene and explicit pornographic pictures, which are totally distasteful and morally unacceptable.

The Commission notes in particular a front-page publication of an obscene pornographic picture in the Weekend News, volume 1 no.33 and some recent publications in the Fun Time magazine, which are affronts to the ethics of

Journalism, public morality and decency.

The Commission has taken an exception to this and as a demonstration of its disenchantment with the publication, the Commission has decided to refer the Weekend News to the police for investigation and possible prosecution.

The Commission wishes to advise all Editors and Publishers of newspapers and magazines to be guided by the sense of public morality and decency and ethics of journalism in the discharge of their duties.

Editor Of Accra Based Newspaper To Be Prosecuted

The Editor of the ‘Weekend News’ an Accra based newspaper is to be prosecuted for publishing pornographic pictures. The National Media Commission referred the editor of the Weekend News to the police for prosecution for publishing the pictures, which it says are affronts to the ethics of journalism, public morality and decency.

A statement signed by the Chairman of the Commission, Nutifafa Kuenyehia also condemned some recent publications in the ‘Fun Time’ magazine. It advised all editors and publishers of newspapers and magazines to be guided by the sense of public morality and decency as well as the ethics of journalism in the discharge of their duties.

Meanwhile the commission has appealed to the security agencies investigating the alleged plot against some journalists to undertake comprehensive and thorough checks to establish the veracity or otherwise of the statement and bring the perpetrators to book. It however called on the media to be more circumspect in their reportage on the matter to enable the security agencies to complete their investigations on time.
