Protesting lecturers at the Koforidua Technical University (KTU) have threatened to strike by next week if Chairman of the University’s Council does not see to the promotion of lecturers who are due for upgrade.
The lecturers were joined by their students to stage a protest on Thursday 12 April 2018 to push for a myriad of issues affecting the university to be addressed.
They also accused the Chairman of the University Council , Professor Obeng Apol, of arrogating all decision making powers to himself and taking arbitrary decisions, micro-managing the university, unnecessary interference in the activities of the university including day-to-day payments and interference in Student Representative Council (SRC) activities.
The protests resulted in the halt of teaching and learning activities at the Koforidua Technical University.
The General Secretary of the KTU branch of the Technical University Teachers Association of Ghana (TUTAG), Nana Gyasi, stated that all they seek is that authorities “should bring him (Prof Apol) to order and ask him to operate within the mandate to which he was appointed”.
He said they are expecting that the lecturer promotions will be executed in the following few days else they will go ahead with their threat to lay down their tools.
