Proprietor appeals for extension of assistance to private schools

ACCRA, April 29, GNA- The Proprietor of the Saint Elizabeth Basic School at Haatso, a suburb of Accra, Mr. Bernard Kyeremeh has commended the government for providing basic school children in the country with textbooks, free transport and introducing the school feeding programme He said, to further improve education, the government should consider extending these benefits enjoyed by public schools to private schools since their parents also pay VAT, which assists in the development of education in the country.

Mr. Kyeremeh was speaking during the 10th Speech and Prize Giving Day of Saint Elizabeth Basic School at Haatso, near Legon. He suggested that the Ministry of Education, Science and Sports should involve teachers who are in the classroom in the planning and formulation of policies on education since they are the ones who would be applying whatever had been decided upon by policy makers. On academic performance, Mr. Kyeremeh said Saint Elizabeth Basic School, placed 28th in the Basic Education Certificate Examination out of 95th Junior Secondary schools in the Ga-East District. The school had the best result among the schools in Haatso-Papao area. He appealed to parents to provide the necessary learning materials to the children and also make sure that parents disciplined their children when they misbehaved and urged all parents to try and attend PTA meetings.

The Assistant Director of Education at the Ga-East District Assembly, Mr. Ken Abebrese called on school pupils to desist from throwing rubbish anywhere since they are swept into the gutters during rainfalls.

Mr. Wim Buursen, who represented the Prisma Group from Netherlands who sponsored the construction of the school block cut the tape to inaugurate a new eighteen classroom storey-building. Rev. Mary Doe Asare of AME Church, Tema unveiled a plaque to commemorate the 10th Anniversary celebration of the school. Pupils who excelled in the various subjects were presented with prizes.
