President of the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA), George Kweku-Ofori, has taken a swipe at the spate at which foreigners are infiltrating the country’s retail business environment as it renders local businesses uncompetitive to support socio-economic growth.

Speaking at the end-of-year get-together of the Mobile Phones and Accessories Dealers Association (MPADA) in Accra, he said: “We cannot sit down for others—foreigners—to bulldoze their way onto the retail market to rob the gains of local businesses.

The GUTA boss is therefore appealing to government to ensure strict adherence to the investment laws of the country to protect and cushion local businesses to provide jobs and wealth.

“Though we are not against competition, foreign traders have no right to infiltrate the retail business, especially in prime business locations,” he said.

The merry-making event brought together dealers of mobile phone and accessories to interact, network and find solutions to the challenges facing their operations.
