PRESS RELEASE

To All Media Houses

15 March 2017

It is with no doubt that suicide among Ghanaian youth in recent times has become rampant and worrying. Every now and then, the horrible news of youth hanging themselves is making the headlines in our various media portals. Parents go to work and pick up their loud sounding phones, only to be told the canker of suicide has rendered them childless or ripped them off parenthood and for that matter must put up with the necessary arrangements to have their young seeds buried. As we speak, many homes are filled with sorrowful tears and gnashing of teeth for the irreplaceable lose in the family. The National Youth Empowerment and Accountability Movement (NYEAM), the mouth piece of the youth is saddened with these unfortunate occurrences amongst the youth and wishes to register our utter discontentment of this uncharitable phenomenon which if left unaddressed, will be emulated by many of our youth. One thing that is certain in this suicide saga is that, the deceased are found dead hanged on a rope but as to the cause of this kind of death is unknown. As to whether it is self-inflicted death or some murderers are behind it and deliberately hang the deceased as to cover up the babaric act no one knows. The question NYEAM is asking which of course that of many Ghanaians are asking is that what is really contributing to the recent unfortunate suicide cases amongst our youth? This is a serious matter that needs an urgent attention and NYEAM do not wish to play politics with it. Political lingering on part of government to unravel the myth behind the misery of the youth is gravely disappointing.

We the Ghanaian youth deserve better than the total neglect by the authorities with regards to these suicides. It would be recalled that in the 2016 polls, the youth played a very pivotal role in choosing the current Akufo-Addo led leadership and now that the youth need them the most, the leadership is either hiding in the shadow or are totally out of reach. The failure of the government in protecting the vulnerable youth has left many of the youth wonder whether their security and safety has been compromised under the current government or not. NYEAM would therefore like to tell the government unequivocally to step up to its responsibilities and provide good leadership to the youth. God bless Ghana, God bless Ghana youth. Thank you.
