Provide more resources for NCCE - Participants

Ho, Nov. 24, GNA - Participants at a day's workshop on Formulative Research on Appointment Of District Chief Executives on Wednesday called on the Government to resource the National Commission on Civic Education (NCCE) to enable it educate the masses on the constitution and government policies.

The National Network of Local Civic Unions (NETCU) and the Volta Network of Local Civic Unions (VONCU) under the auspices of the Government Accountability Improve Trust (GAIT) organized the workshop. The 45 participants which included members of civic unions from Jasikan, Hohoe, Sogakofe and Ho districts, assembly members and heads of departments deliberated on the election of District Chief Executives. While some of the participants called for the election of chief executives others suggested the nomination of two or more people by the President to contest for the position.

They contended that the current appointment of chief executives was giving room for the assemblies to be politicized.

The participants claimed that for good governance and accountability to prevail assemblies should be made to work outside partisan politics, adding that the current appointment of Chief Executives was an avenue for bribery and corruption and should be changed.

They therefore, called on the NCCE to intensify its educate on the issue to the people to enable them come out with their views. "This would enable the Government institute measures to make the Assemblies non-partisan," They added.

Mr Anthony Kumaga, President of VONCU said the workshop was organized to seek the views of civic unions in the region on the appointment of chief executives and come out with recommendations.
