Public awareness on buruli ulcer leading to reported cases

Accra, Aug. 31, GNA - The rise in reported cases of Buruli Ulcer in the country is due to public awareness of its treatment rather than new infections, Dr. Edwin Ampedu, Programme Manager Buruli Ulcer at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital said on Thursday.

"The growing public awareness has contributed immensely to the rise of reported cases in the country which is helping to check the rise of new cases," he said.

Dr Ampedu said this when he received a 110,000 Euros worth of surgical equipment comprising 100 pieces of wheel chairs and 200 pairs of crotches donated by ANESVAD, a Spanish Non-Governmental organization. Dr George Amofa, Director of Public Health of the Ghana Health Service on behalf of the Spanish NGO, made the presentation.

Dr Amofa said the disease was a major problem facing most African countries especially in tropical regions of West Africa. In Ghana it is present in seven out of 10 regions with the worst affected being Ashanti Region recording a total of 14 affected districts.

Brong Ahafo has cases in seven districts and the Eastern Region has cases in six districts.

Dr. Amofa urged the Unit to put the equipment to good use and thanked ANESVAD for their continuous contribution in prevention and treatment of the Buruli Ulcer since 2004, including the construction of laboratory and treatment centre The package is to be shared among eight government health centres to serve the needs of the people in the affected districts.
